Italy's Cinecitta Studios Aims to Lure Back Big Hollywood

In its heyday, Cinecitta was the land of Federico Fellini, who shot all of his films in its studios and claimed he was never more at home than in Studio 5. Charlton Heston, Elizabeth Taylor, Susan Hayward, Robert Taylor and Kirk Douglas shot popular sword-and-sandal films in the studios. Women like Sophia Loren, Anita Ekberg and Monica Vitti rose to fame through their work at Cinecitta.

ITALY BOOSTS INTERNATIONAL PRODUCTIONS

Italian Government just increased the tax credits for bigger-budget pictures, which will benefit many Hollywood movies as well as indies and domestic productions. The attraction of International productions and co-productions, in particular, should at this point receive a boost from the changes. The Government confirmed relief available at 25% of qualifying production expenditure, for international feature films, going from a cap of 5 mill € per project to a cap at 10 mill€ per company. “The measure taken by the

ROME – 21st Century Fox co-COO James Murdoch met with Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi Monday to outline a $55 million (€40 million) plan to develop two new high-profile Italian TV series and increase the use of Rome’s historic Cinecitta Studios.

“EVEREST” DIRECTOR AND CAST LEAVE LASTING IMPRINT AT CINECITTÁ STUDIOS

The much anticipated drama, “Everest,” celebrated a successful location shoot at Cinecittá Studios with a ceremony in which the director Baltasar Kormákur and two of the stars, Josh Brolin and Jason Clark, left their handprints in cement.

Based on the tragic events of 1996 when eight climbers lost their lives while attempting to scale Mt. Everest in the face of devastating snowstorms, the film utilized Cinecittá’s enormous outdoor tank set as Everest’s sprawling base camp where thrill seekers from all over the world prepared to climb the world’s highest mountain.
